Is Your Business Website Safe? Suffolk Developers discuss staying safe online
Website security, PHP updates and the questions every business owner should be asking.
When was the last time you checked whether your business website was secure?
Not whether it looked good
Not whether the contact form worked
Not whether it appeared on Google
Whether the technology running behind it was up to date, properly maintained and protected against known vulnerabilities.
For many small businesses, the answer is a blushing I’m not entirely sure and that’s exactly why we brought Suffolk Developers together.
Calling All Accidental Developers!
On 23 October, Suffolk Developers, supported by EMPOWERUS CIC, brought together a group of experienced technical professionals to discuss website security, PHP and the challenges facing businesses that rely on technology they don’t necessarily understand. The conversation was prompted by concerns surrounding PHP, the programming language powering a significant proportion of the world’s websites, including many built using WordPress.
Like any technology, PHP needs maintaining and updating. Older versions can eventually stop receiving security support, potentially leaving websites exposed to vulnerabilities. The challenge is that many business owners have no idea which version their website uses, who is responsible for updating it or whether their hosting provider is managing the problem.
Some businesses have websites built years ago by developers they’ve since lost touch with. Others manage their own websites, having gradually inherited technical responsibilities they never intended to take on. We call them accidental developers. They’re business owners, administrators, marketers and enthusiastic amateurs who have found themselves responsible for keeping essential digital infrastructure running and they deserve access to reliable advice.
Watch the Suffolk Developers Discussion
We’ve recorded the conversation so that businesses, developers and anyone responsible for a website can benefit from the knowledge shared.
The discussion explores the practical challenges of website maintenance, technical responsibility and understanding when specialist support might be needed.
You don’t need to be a developer to follow the conversation. Our aim is to help businesses ask better questions, understand potential risks and make informed decisions about the technology they depend on.
Suffolk Developers
Practical knowledge. Shared expertise. Stronger businesses.
Who looks after your software or hardware? How do you know it’s secure? What should you be asking your developer? For many businesses, technology is essential but understanding what’s happening behind the scenes can be difficult. Suffolk Developers brings together experienced technical professionals to share their knowledge, answer questions and help businesses make better-informed decisions.
Supported by EMPOWERUS CIC, our conversations are designed to make specialist expertise accessible, practical and useful.
